Remain vigilant about fraud scams this holiday season.
Holiday Fraud Awareness
The holiday season is a busy time for family and friends, and it is also a time when scammers are more active. Here are a few tips to heighten your awareness of potential fraud scams:
When in doubt – PAUSE! Fraudsters want you to feel rushed and panicked so you don’t take the time to think and question them. No legitimate company will pressure you into action if you feel uncomfortable. In these cases, end the conversation, call a trusted friend, family member or your banker for advice. It’s okay to Pause.
Double-check when someone calls and claims to be from a company that usually doesn’t call you. Fraudsters have figured out how to use available technology to look like they are calling from a company that you probably know. If you feel pressured to make a decision, or if something doesn’t sound right, end the conversation. Pause, then call back using a publicly available phone number, never the number they give you.
Never share personal information, such as account numbers, PINs, or passwords. Nicolet Bank would never ask you for this information.
Avoid risky payment methods. If someone asks you to pay with gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency, end the conversation. These payment methods are usually red flags for scams.
Place a note on your refrigerator with the word “Pause” on it. Use this as a visual reminder to slow down and think before you act.
